Am I Too Late for the Growing Season?

This year is my first year of growing my own and I have a number of soft fruit plants growing, all in pots, quite successfully too - although no fruit to show yet! Anyway, I was wondering if I could extend my range and grow potatoes or onions? Have I still got time, or is it too late for this season?! Is there anything that isn't too late to start having a go at growing?!

Any advice is welcomed!

hi there QB - there are absolutely loads of things you can still grow.
Some things you will need to buy plants eg tomatoes, that will obviously cost more but still much less than buying the toms, but will still taste sooo much better!
But you can sow lettuce seeds throughout summer - french/runner beans, beetroot, squash, carrots etc. Go to an allotment site such as www.allotments4all.co.uk for advice.

I think you're too late for potatoes and onions, however you can still sow the following:

Beetroot
Carrots
Some varieties of broccoli
Cauliflower 'All Year Round'
Most salad leaves
Rocket
Spinach
Spring Onions
Runner Beans
Climbing Beans
Dwarf Beans
Peas
Pumpkins
Radishes
Turnips

And now I will draw breath again!!! So still plenty to grow even at this time of year.

There is no such thing as the growing season; veg grows year round - it just depends on the veg.

Do you mean onions from seed, or planting out onion sets? You can grow spring onion still as it doesn't take long to grow, or sow seed and eat the some onions smaller, and leave the rest in the ground for a spring harvest.
Sets you are probably too late for, as they need to grow and die back in order to enable them to store for the winter.


Potatoes; you can still plant seed potatoes, you will just have a later harvest. The problem with this will be blight so you might need to keep an eye on that and take preventative measures as the spuds grow. I have saved back on single potato for a christmas [well, boxing day actually] harvest of new potatoes. You might be well to get a small bag of seed potatoes and grow in pots [it helps as you can then move into a sheltered spot if the frost comes before they are ready].

i only put potatoes in on sunday - i have a new allotment and just got fingers crossed!!!! pots are good though for them. i have an old chimney pot which ive used also this year at home for them. check out this site

I admit to sticking things in the ground still and hoping for the best, I think of it as a learning curve. Like today I learned that a bird will get in the side of a net and eat your very first strawberry, which you were leaving a couple of more days till it was perfect.
