latitude c600 mouse freezing

Hi I have a Latitude c600 running xp , it has 256 ram which I am going to upgrade to 512 , but some times the mouse freezes and takes a while to be useable again , any ideas ? I realise the memory is low hopefully upgrading it will help , I think live messenger didnt help as I uninstalled it and use windows messenger and it seems better. I thought the processor speed would be enough to carry xp , any advice would be great
