Boiler servicing costs

Options
I've been quoted £89.50 to have my boiler serviced by the same guys who installed it last year - it's a combi boiler, Potterton make.
Does this sound reasonable?

  • 89.50... not too bad, not brilliant either, a fair price overall, you could ring local CORGI REGISTERED plumbers too see if you can get an average idea off costs etc or you could try british gas - slightly more exspensive but they are reliable to a point and you can get covered for breakdowns etc and you can be sure they will always send out a qualified engineer should you ever have any problems...
  • I paid about £60 to have mine serviced by the guy who fitted it, bit of a rip off as all they do is give it a quick look over and hoover out dust etc

  • I never trust anyone that prices just under a milestone price! £89.50 is as bad as £29.95 :rotfl:

Seriously though, it depends what the service actually involves. If they actually take the burner out and check the injectors, check the burner pressure and gas rate, working and standing gas pressures, check the flue, the fan, then it starts to sound a little better. My guess is they will just do a visual check and give it a bit of a hoover out as kpburke has described. Have a ring round and see what other engineers do as a service and what they charge. £50-£60 is the going rate in my area (SE), even the checks above shouldn't take more than an hour for a competent person, and there are few parts on combis that are changed as a matter of course unless they are obviously faulty.

Ours was 65 quid last year - we used the same indepenent guy for 6 years seemed to go up about 5 a year! he always did a really good service we had no problems with it. He was really knowledgeable about stuff etc.. he was not only corgi registered but also specialised in the type of boiler we had. He would probably be about 70 quid this year (this house has really old boiler so we took a cover out on it that includes a service!) we are in the south east too!

    I've been Money Tipped!
Just read this before i phoned around.
Powergen does a good deal with a standard service for £60 including VAT.

A wee bit better than a local boiler service who quoted ermmm £148 + VAT.....
