help needed as actiontec wireless adaptor not working

in Techie Stuff
my actiontec wireless adaptor is not working and its not manufactured anymore. is there anyway to fix it?
or if i were to buy a new one would it have to be actiontec or would another brand work.
my old one plugged into the usb port and looked similar to a mouse (pc type not fluffy one...lol)
i am not a techie so any advice in plain english would be the best way.
