Feel guilty about my rabbit...

Well, my rabbit Flopsy has just been put down

He had an absess in his mouth last year that got treated at the vets and cost £220 ish.. but unfortunately it came back and he got into a right mess, his bottom tooth also grew long and at a funny angle so he couldn't eat and lost loads of weight..

I am feeling so guilty though, the vet rang earlier after they put him under and said it was very bad, it had got into his jaw muscle, puss from the absess was getting into his mouth and I feel so bad that I didn't take him round sooner!:o

I just thought he was not cleaning himself properly, and only realised his tooth needed clipping yesterday. I bathed him twice in the last 2 weeks to try and keep him clean..

He was such a lovely rabbit and had free run of the garden 24hrs a day, so I know he had a good life, but what a horrible thing for him to have gone through, I feel awful.. I should have taken him round weeks ago! :(

OH is going to collect him later, and we will put him in the garden with a new tree ontop.

Gutted.. G-G

G-G im so sorry for your loss. Please dont beat yourself up about it..you did your very best and if you had realised earlier you would have taken him to the vets sooner..hindsight is a b***er. He couldn't tell you what was wrong so dont blame yourself. You gave him a lovely life and im sure he appreciated that greatly.:grouphug: sending you a big hug

I don't really see what else you could have done. As others have said, pets can't tell use what is wrong with them and from your reaction you clearly loved him very much. Take comfort from the fact he had a good life in a good home and remember the happy times.

Aww thanks guys.. I feel silly for posting about a silly rabbit, but he really was special to us.. As I say he had free run of the garden and so when we came back from being out he would be at the gate to greet us along with the dogs.. bless him..

OH is sorting him out now, next to a tree, so we can remember where he is..

I keep crying, feel so silly, but the rabbit shed just isn't the same without him, and i'm sure the other rabbits know he's gone

Aww i'm so sorry to hear that, but even people who have experience with animals get it wrong sometimes. I mean you were not to know it was so bad and us pet owners are not vets so can't instantly tell whats wrong.

It is so difficult to know with small animals when they need to go to the vets.

I had my faithful little friend Jessica, a lop-eared dwarf, put to sleep a couple of weeks ago and it was so sad seeing the life leaving her little body. But she was suffering, and it was the right thing to do, just as it was the right thing for Flopsy. Even if you had got him to the vet earlier, there may still have been nothing they could have done.

I read another thread on here just after she died where someone posted about their dog dying, and someone else had posted a poem on there about an angel saying that those who had pets had chosen tears, because as humans we tend to outlive our pets. The poem made me cry my heart out, but it was really lovely. Did you see it? I cant remember what the thread was called, or I would search for it and give you the link.

Burying him under a new tree is a lovely idea. I have decided to order a rose bush called "pretty Jessica" to remember my little one by. Like Flopsy, she too had a good life with lots of freedom to run about the garden, and she had many escapades and adventures which make me smile now when I think about her.

    RIP Flopsy
