Assetts/private plate

Quick question.

As I was putting together my SOA I got to my car and then had a thought.

I have a private plate on my X5 that spells my first initial, middle initial and surname. Is this classed as an assett? I want to take it off the car before it goes back and put it on retention. The cost for this is £105. Would i get in bother if I paid ths (cash) and if I did could it be taken back from me. Point is it's pretty unique to me anyway and only cost £800 in the first place.

Do I need to even mention it to the OR if I get another reg assigned anyway?

Would he not know about it as they check legal ownership? He may overlook but he may click on that its worth a few bob.Could it be of value to others or is it that unique to you that its not that sought after?

    Cheers Dalip,

Bright eyes re the plate it is unique to me. first initial middle initail surname. And although it "may" be worth a few quid I paid £800 for it, I was under the impression that assetts were classed at a grand or above (I got that from when people ask about tv's etc)

Re the legal ownership, when I bought the car it had a standard plate on, which shows on the hp agreement, when I hand it back it will have the same:cool:

(this makes more sense if I start by saying I posted on here about my car and plates, which are cherished and mean nothing to anyone but me probably). The OR will want it from you, but should let a third party buy it back off him for a set amount - mine wanted a small fortune but I offered a smaller amount and he accepted on the basis that it was a guarenteed, immediate sale instead of the quotes I got that were prices based on 6 months selling time (and then only if someone wanted them). TO give you an indication, mine was brought for about £100, a few years back granted (I think about 11 years now), but not a huge cost at all and really not at all relevant to anyone else I would have thought, but he still wanted it - it's not just assets over £1000 they want, it's any assests that are worth anything that aren't really needed by you, and whilst a tv nowadays is seen as vital and private plate is a real luxury still (I even argued on the fact that it was given to me by my father who won't talk to me now because I have gone BR).

Go to the plate sales people online and type in something similar eg if yours is D22 LPD look for other D22 numbers, etc. You can also request an obligation free quote from them on your plate, but beware! Use a throwaway email address from hotmail or something, as they *still* are bugging me about selling mine even after I clearly told them I didn't want to after all (use a fake phone number too). Get all three quotes and average them/use a lowish one and submit that to the OR.

    Hope that helps

I have a private plate on my car, it didn't even cross my mind to list it as an asset, and the OR didn't mention it either. Mr P paid about £250 for it 4-5 years ago, it spells my name with the help of a strategically placed black dot.

I didn't list it as an asset - it was on my car that I had to declare to the OR and he spotted it. It didn't cross my mind either as a)I didn't buy it and b)It's been my reg on the same car for 11 years now so is just my reg, so it was a bit of a shock, but that's what happened.

    Great for you PP.

I just thought it would appear on log book. The OR who is dealing with our case is exempting ours but said he was waiting for confirmation of ownership which would state reg etc.but I do understand what you are saying, lets hope you can retain it and he will be none the wiser.

Hi ITBS...good point that you raise.

Both OH & I have private plates each. OH has already gone BR ...car value £1k max with plate that was never mentioned & I have just swapped mine over to a lower value vehicle as I needed to downsize ...before the Merc was returned to the finance Co .

Can you just swap the plate onto your work vehicle before the X5 is returned? I would think this a better option than retention. The OR may be less bothered as its more hassle & cost to them to remove it.

    Be interested in the outcome.
