No Standby option on shutdown

I have a Packard Bell PC running Windows XP. When you go to shutdown the PC, there is no option for Standby, only Restart or Shutdown. The Standby icon is showing but it is greyed out.
I am going to update chipset drivers tonight in the hope that this might fix it but does anyone actually what the problem might be? Is there a setting somewhere? I've looked at the power options but cannot see anything obvious.
I also have a similar problem with the monitor. Although in the display options, I have set it to switch off monitor after 15 minutes, it doesn't. This is not linked to the problem with the PC standby as the monitor was doing this (or rather not doing it) when it was connected to my old PC (which, incidentally, did go into standby).

The two problems may well be related. Have you checked that you have the latest drivers for your video card? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I would say that Advanced Power Managment (APM) is not enabled. This can sometimes be turned off in the BIOS. You normally hit DEL or F2 as the computer starts to access the BIOS.0
