I phoned TalkTalk the pther day to see why I was only getting 1.6mb on my broadband. I have been with them for over two years fom th every start, and he said that I needed to renew my contract to get a quicker service, that he would send me out a wireless router worth over £60 if I renewed my contract for another twelve months. I dont need a wireless router I needed a quicker service.

he also said that the modem I have only goes up to 2mbs

the thing is can I buy a modem that would get me a quicker service and what kind would I have to get, I dont need wireless?

Sounds like a con to me. Just out of interest, what speeds were you getting before and have you changed terms of service or anything?

Thanks john , I have never really needed it fast ,but its the one and only modem they ever gave me, and I didnt really bother about the speed ,but it seems to be very slow these days sometimes its only 1.4 it still says dial up on the start up it doent connect automatically

all I really need is a modem that could give me a little speed

we have had up to 2.1 mbs before

What service are you signed up for with Talk talk? As far as I know their LLU offering has always been an up to 8mb service. Its most unlikely that your modem is limiting the speed that you are getting. Its more likely to be other factors such as your distance from the exchange, noise on the line, or the state of your internal telephone wiring.

The dialup connection dialog you describe is normal for a modem that connects via the USB port.

If the guy is offering you a wireless router for free it may be worth getting as you will not get the dialog any more, and you will be connected as long as the router is switched on.
It will connect to your PC via an ethernet cable so just make sure you have an ethernet port first.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Some, older, USB Based ADSL Modems, did only work up to 2mbps. So there is truth in what you've been told.

You don't need wireless, but the thing nowadays is that no one really uses USB Modems. they are flaky, and a router is an always on connection, no more double clicking and waiting that few seconds for it to connect. It is always connected and just sits there waiting for you to use the internet

If you want faster, (which you should be able to get), you could purchase an adsl modem router/wireless modem router from any computer shop, but this probably will cost you around £40 - £50. The basic ones will support up to 8mbps no problems!

The USB speedtouch modems are notoriously crappy, but they'll happily sync at more than 2mbit. He's lying, basically. (the tech support guy, not the guy above. I got distracted and had this page open for ages)

Talktalk also suck though, so it might be time for a move. Your new ISP will give you a decent router too, no doubt. If you really want to stay with them, you can get an ethernet modem or a router for ~£20. This will be "always-on" so you won't need to make it connect whenever you want to use the net.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it
