Plastering Quote

I'm waiting for a few quotes to come in for boarding and skimming 2 rooms (3m x 3m x 3.6m -approx 50m2 & 3m x 3.4m x 5m-approx 67m2) and also the entire hallway and staircases for ground floor, 1st floor hall and stairs up to 2nd floor (inc ceilings). I think all walls and most of ceilings will need boarding over original plaster (dot & dab) as walls are all over the place (although pretty solid) from previous bodge jobs and general disrepair (house built 1890s and previously bedsits!) but the odd one may escape with a skim.

I have one quote in from a reputable plasterer who has done a good job on a few friends houses (just skimming not boarding- & charged them around £300-400 per room I think). My quote was around £1300 for one room, £1780 for the other and about £3000 for the hallway/stairs. Seems a tad steep to me!! ( I know he's pretty busy though!!) what's the going rate up north (Yorkshire)?

cheers

It depends on the work that needs to be done as it is difficult to quote without seeing the job, possibly a bit on the steep side though

£300 quid a room is about what we paid a couple of years ago, and that is in the South East. Our plasterer managed to even out some really bad walls and cover up artex with a skim whereas some other quotes were only too keen to suggest boarding at extra cost.

Have a chat with your neighbours too, but if you have used other tradesmen at home that you trust (eg. electrician/plumber etc.) then they may be able to recommend someone they know is good and reliable. It is also a good time to consider adding wall lights, or ceiling spots, and in our case the sparky / plasterer worked well having known each other before.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yes I was 'mildly surprised' to say the least!! Particularly as I have got another quote just to skim the walls and ceilings of the two rooms for £700 for the pair (he hadn't seen the rooms with all the wallpaper off at that stage) . Having stripped off all the paper I think a few walls and and one ceiling (large areas of very rough/lumpy patchy plaster/filler e.g. over old door ways etc) would need boarding. I was contemplating ripping all the skirting boards/architraves off anyway as they are typical ex-bedsit quality!!!! so would be prepared to board the walls if necessary & if this gave the best finish (& wasn't outrageously pricey!!)..... Assuming a re-skim is gonna be £400-500 per room the extra £800-900 per room from this quote seems a bit excessive!!
Incidentally any ideas on a ball park cost for fitting new architraves, skirting boards and hanging new doors for 3 bedrooms & groundfloor/1st floor hallways?? I may well do it myself if I can get time off work but it would be good to know what I would expect to pay a decent joiner!

Hard to say without looking but i charge £150.00 per day and it would take anything from 3 to 5 days depending on door type/skirting archi type/size and complexity of rooms.

Thanks woodbutcher - Sounds fair to me - I'll bear that in mind.
