Wired networking help

I've got 2 pc's ( same room ) both have pci cards for networking, im on dial up but want to use the 2nd pc for downloading files only (sick of main pc crashing ) while the main one is for internet/documents, so firstly is this even possible ? and where can one find one of these is it earthnet boxes that connect them ? is it poss to find a wired one with wireless support for the laptop? and in true mse style cheaply!!

Also is anyone aware of a good guide online guide to wired networking as all I find is info on wireless :(
If I helped or saved you money - Thank me

  • If I understand your question correctly - all you need is a cross-over ethernet cable available from most PC suppliers for a few pounds.
  • yep a cross over cable will allow you to network the 2 PCs, assuming they both have network connections! Alternatively you might want to look for a wireless router, these can be about £50 and you'll need a wireless access card too - maybe another £20. Purchasing one with an ADSL modem in might be worthwhile if you think you might go broadband at some point...

Assuming Windows is in use, you can use the "internet connection sharing wizard" to configure your shared connection.

Mrtickle is correct, you can use a crossover cable to link the two pcs together and use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to allow both to access the internet. It is not an ideal solution as the pc with the modem must be switched on for either pc to access the interent. It is also not the easiest of things to set-up properly, particularly with older operating systems.

thanks guys I thought i could directly connect them but it didnt seem to work? ( pc1 runs nearly 24/7 so for downloading pc2 thats fine for me Scotty ) both run XP home, both recognise pci network adapters are there and both show they are unplugged so I guess its the settings somewhere? running ICS doesnt really help at all as it only asks me to run it from XP disc and then the merry go round process starts over again ! so tried making a floppy which advises to run the XP disc?? any ideas guys, cheers :)

Jezza im dialling into aol broadband as I am away from my home broadband connection and I already use adsl wireless at home, when beta testing of AOL B/B started to current customers I signed up 4 it as I got dial up access at near 512 kb broadband speeds included, AOL 2MB originally included dial up but when released to the public the 2MB service was renamed AOL Platinium without the additional dial up and £5.00 cheaper, so for £5.00 i get broadband speed anywhere, anytime, anyplace ( my mobile gets a signal, or where I sign on as a AOL guest ) :)

sounds like you're using a straight through cable rather than a crossover cable.

There you go. As you can see on the image the cables 'crossover' from one plug to the other. If you look at yours it should look like that, usually have 'xover' on the ends as well. If both sides are the same then it's a straight through cable.
  • Any independent computer shop will give advice and supply a crossover cable at minimum cost. You should be able to set up Internet Connection Sharing on XP fairly easily using Control Panel - Internet Options and Set up new connection wizard.

If stuck I'm sure your local Independent dealer will sort you with a call out for a lot less than the hours you may spend trying to solve the problem yourself
