So many good reasons to be frugal

Oh yes they're brilliant, I got one of those in Cardiff Ikea when my friend and I went to Wales to get her son's passport from Newport. It was only 25p, it's a bit big for me to use for my daily shop but I keep all my recyclable cardboard in it.0

I buy the sainsburys bags with the cardboard bottoms, i can use them for anything then, usually use them when shopping in Asda!0

Instead of wondering what to do with all your carriers, don't get them in the first place, problem solved. I've got a huge canvas shopper that I bought from ebay, and plan to get a couple more. If I can't fit my all my shopping into them I use cardboard boxes which are then sent to recycling.
I work in a shop and give out HUNDREDS of bags a week. One particular lady has a carrier EVERY time she comes in - sometimes a couple of times a day, when I asked her what she thought about the Irish charging 10p per bag, she was mortified. When I asked her what she does with all her bags, she said she throws them away! There's no point knocking if there's no-one in I guess?
We need a massive programme of education starting with children who will hopefully pass on their knowledge to their (heads buried in the sand) parents.

What worries me regarding plastic bags and land-fill waste is all the black bin bags that the councils insist you use to dispose of your rubbish in! Ours is collected early on a Tuesday morning and when I look out late on a Monday evening I can count maybe 50 bags of rubbish awaiting collection just from the few shops/flats that I can actually see from my window. And, if it's not in a black bin bag they won't take it!
The council supply the bags - one, maybe two each per week - but I can bet they're not biodegradeable, and if you need anymore then you have to supply your own, but again not many places, if any, stock biodegradeable bags. Even the residential areas that have wheelie bins are expected to place their rubbish in black bags before dumping them in the bin, so what on earth effect is all this excess plastic having on our environment  :wall:"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

It is that what you do, good or bad,
will come back to you three times as strong!

I use a granny trolley for my shopping(I can't drive)no need for carriers just put it straight in the trolley. As a shopper(sainsburys to you) I don't think anyone is actually shown how to pack when they learn the job!! Although i do know one of our shoppers was taken to task over using too many carrier bags - more to do with costing the company money than protecting the enviroment i suspect. Our store also has a carrier bag recycling facility.0

At my DS's school they have an eco-committee, of which DS is a member. They are learning all about reduce, re-use, recycle and have come up with some ideas to be implemented in school, like recycling paper and turning off lights in classrooms when all the children are in assembly.
There are three in our household and we have a normal dustbin (not a wheelie-bin). We never fill it; usually it is about 1/2 to 3/4 full. This is probably a result of recycling and OS living. On bin collection day, he usually comments on the number of black bags our neighbours put out. Our next door neighbours usually have four or five bin bags and there are only 4 of them.
It makes me so proud of him to know that he is taking these important things in at such a young age.Sealed Pot Challenge #8 £341.90

I remember as a kid my mum/gran/auntie all using a canvas shopping bag that was covered in PVC (I think) and you could get them in all sorts of designs.
Sometimes you see a little old lady with one these days but very rarely.
I'm more of a backpack kind of gal and any carrier bags I do have are used as rubbish bags.0 -

My Nan calls her trolley her 'chuck wagon'! As she chucks everything in it! You can get some quite trendy ones of these nowadays with funky patterns on.
I always use a jute bag (it cost £2 from my local wholefood store but worth every penny it is soooo strong and will last forever) also I use a rucksack. I hate it when I forget them so try so try really hard not to or I carry stuff if I can manage it which I often can.
If only people knew what the discarded carrier bags did to wildlife![size=-2]Remember its nice to be nice and its good to share!

A couple of years ago I bought 4 large supermarket bags from Lakeland....... they are large bags with wooden handles and hold a great deal. We put them in the trolly when we do our shopping and then my husband packs the groceries in them as they come off the conveyor, 4 bags holds a months shopping. The carriers we do occasionally get from Tesco we use as bin bags. I do not have a waste bin, spud peelings etc go into a bucket with a lid which sits under the work surface, tea bags, apple cores and the like get slung into it and its emptied once every couple of days into the compost bin in the garden. The carriers hang on the door handle and are put out when they become full, we recycle glass paper and plastic into the bin which the Council collects along with the normal dustbin.
If I get an build up of carrier bags we put them in the recycle bin for bags which Tesco have in their foyer.
