our sainsburys has just acquired a recycling bin for carriers, apprently according to the manager its there cos people kept asking for one. so it may well be worth bugging your sainsburys manager. also sainsburys give you a penny off your shopping for each of there own carrier bags you reuse (make sure you check they do this at the till). i put my pennies in the pin money pot. must have had a fair whack out of them over the months, there looking tatty now though.0

If you have your things delivered by Tesco they have told me that the driver in obliged to take the bags from last weeks shop away with him to recycle in store, that appeases me somewhat but they really do need to start acting responsibly.

Ooooooh don't get me started on this one!!!
I'd love to know who teaches them how to do the packing for Tesco home shopping because I have exactly the same problem - ONE item per carrier bag half the time  :wall:
I've now got a big black bin liner full of carrier bags that I will be handing back to the driver on his next visit - such a ridiculous waste!!!!!!! :wall:"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Oh dear! I thought I had it bad at the supermarket! I usually have to stand next to the cashier and snatch the carrier bags out of their hands as they always insist on putting things like milk in a separate bag to everything else etc etc. - If I point out i dont want things bagged they are always lovely about it though, but they've obviously been trained to bag certain things separately.
Re: packed lunches, have sent an email to the customer services for the company. For goodness sake, I could understand about the sandwhiches as they were cheese and ham, so health and safety regulations state that you cannot serve them after a certai number of hours etc etc. But the rest of the lunch consisted of sealed bags of crisps, fruslei bars, and apples, all of which have a very long shelf life.I've made my debts bite-size too depressing to look at all at once so am handling them one at a time - first up Graduate Loan £1720 paid off! only £280 to go!!!
Money to raise for tuition fees: £3000

I use the Tesco BFL now, have half a dozen which do me for my shopping. I have a huge pile of carrier bags etc which I don't wish to add to. I have contacted the local council about recycling but they won't be getting to our part of town until next year sometime, as far I can remember. Although the street just across from me has recycling boxes etc, we don't
There are recycling bins etc located not far from me but it's getting the stuff there. I'd need several pairs of hands, strong ones to get it there.
I did suggest to Tesco too about giving discount for people who reused their carrier bags, didn't mention that though. I wonder why...
I wrote to Tesco recently about their recycling policy and this is what they said.
Thank you for your email.
It is our policy to recycle all product packaging. Recycled board is used wherever possible in all non-contact food packaging as regulations on this state that we cannot re-use materials where they come into direct contact with food. This is to avoid the risk of any cross-contamination.
However, we do use plastic boxes to transport loose produce and meats to our stores, and these are cleaned and sterilised before they are re-used. This substantially reduces the amount of cardboard used in packaging.
Pre-packed packaging is made as recyclable as possible, by rationalising the number of materials used. Being very much involved in government initiatives to reduce the levels of packaging waste in the UK, our delivery drivers 'back-haul' any cardboard and polythene materials that can be recycled at our centralised recycling centres. Our corporate offices are supplied with recycled paper, facilities for recycling purposes, and electronic communication technologies, which also reduces the amount of paper used.
For a nominal charge, a percentage of which goes to charity, we supply 'Bags for Life'. This is a sturdy carrier bag that is replaced free when worn, and is made from recycled materials.
Tesco is leading the way in green shopping by gradually introducing fully degradable carrier bags in all of its stores up and down the country.
The heat generated within a landfill will lead to disintegration of the degradable Tesco bags within a few months. This is of added benefit to bags used as bin-liners (common re-use) since it allows the flow of air and water around food and garden waste and leads to more rapid biodegradation compared to if they were enclosed in ordinary carrier bags.
If packaging is labelled as biodegradable, this will refer to all of the constituent parts which are included. If there is an element that is not biodegradable, the packaging will not be labelled as such.
Packaging of our organic produce, the nets, punnets, labels, trays and film wrap, are all biodegradable.

In Germany they recycle everything, we are miles behind every other country in Europe. In Austria they recycle 67% of their rubbish, we only recycle a paltry 17%.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. Get a Waitrose Credit Card, then register for the scan self-service. They give you five very strong canvas bags. One of them is a cool bag.
Collect the bags, go to Lidl, do your shopping their, pay cash and put your Lidl shopping in the Waitrose bags.
I've been doing this for two years now ... still haven't spent any money on the Waitrose card though
I reckon the Waitrose bags will last for at least 10 years. And the cool bag is ideal for picnics.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

I've got tons of carrier bags too even though I use them for bin liners. My Asda don't have a bag recycling facility and Tesco's is 14 miles away. I do a "basket" shop every day rather than a weekly shop and got at least 2 or 3 bags a day but have now taken to using my Waitrose BFL obtained last time I visited my parents in Hertfordshire. As I empty it I try to remember to put it back in my handbag for the next day so I've always got it with me. My daughter thinks it's dreadful that I use an "opposition" bag but so what!!0

I was annoyed with myself this afternoon. Went out with my sons to the Doctor and had to get some bits and bobs, alas I'd forgotten to pack my Bs' FL so ended up with several carrier bags, and due to the boxes, the corners split the bags and had to double bag. I have cut down a great deal on regular Tesco carrier bags. I remember years ago in the local Co-op they had the thick carrier bags, like Lidl 9p ones which were 5p then. The reason supermarkets don't charge for them is that they have already factored the cost of the bags into the groceries on the shelves. I see some people who have absolute boat loads of shopping, for goodness sake they must be eating continuously from one week to the next to get through it all, or it goes in the bin!! Also, people who grab large handfuls of carrier bags for lining their bins when they already have around 20/30 bags that their shopping is in. The bags are no more free than I am the Queen. Then there's the 2.5% charge or whatever it is that is included in your credit card bill or whatever, everyone pays for that, not just credit card holders but that's another thread starter.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.” - Oscar Wilde0 -
I always have half a dozen "bags for life" on the go, from various shops. But the favourites for big weekly shops are the blue IKEA holdalls you can buy at their checkouts. They are the same as the yellow ones you use instore.
They are virtually indestructable, my husband uses them to transport building tools and occasionally, rubble!"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0
