Thanks, I will look in to that.
We bought a 30ft lead the day before yesterday and it is brilliant for when we are in a large area. He doesn't feel the lead so he just walks next to us. I know it isn't helping with his lead work but it just makes taking him out that bit less stressful and we are going to mix these types of walks with normal on lead ones. It is basically like him being off lead but we still have the control if another dog comes by, so that he can't go to them.0 -
Gosh, thats some cross,he sounds enormous! Our labradors are really big so we have to get the biggest size available in collars etc,the labrador sized ones just dont do.Usually a neck measurement will get you right size, our boys are 24" around the neck and its not fat so enormous for labrador retrievers.
We have only had our boys for 4 months now and they are much better than they were. They are basically giant 2 year old puppies. The harness we only got a week ago and its an absolute lifesaver.Hubby was getting so sick and tired of ending up on his bottom on the pavement that he was starting to talk about giving them away."Reaching out to touch the stars dont forget the flowers at your feet".0 -
Our dog is 10 stone, 18 months old and a serious puller. He couldn't be walked when he was at the rescue centre cos no one could hold him. He is part rottie and part lab (and we think part great dane). He has had his halti for 6 months now and although he doesn't like it we haven't had any problems with the quality. Did you get the right size? As they do have different sizes for different dogs.
Mine was a smidge over 10 stone, and very powerful I did buy the right size, as I took him in to the petstore for a fitting, I can only assume it failed due to some dodgy stitching.
However after discovering Cesar Milans books, and implementing some of the techniques, he would walk to heel perfectly and I didnt need a Halti type device.0 -
The problem with the harnesses though are although they stop the pulling, I don't feel as if I have any control over what her head is doing - the risk of her snapping at someone and making contact is much less with the halti, as I can see it coming and can pull her away, which doesn't work with a harness. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I love my haltis.
We have never used them before, my family keep giant breeds. I got a greyhoun pup last year and although she is a gorgeous girl and I am loving her more each day she can turn into a kangaroo, literally bouncing into the air. By herself this is fine, I deal with it, we work through it, but If I am to walk the two giants and her together we have a bigger issue. The big dogs are very young too, and MUST stay in walk (developmental bone issues). To walk anyone of them alone, on a normal lead OR loose is fine but to take all three out can be exciting. The halti has really made dog walking a LOT easier for me. They never NEED it 'applied' they have just understood this is the be sensible device.
I have to say, I do not find it attractive I would prefer the facial bits were softer, pliable leather, but the benfits outweight my taste on this one.0 -

He is rather enourmous! But for some reason he thinks he is a small lap dog and tries to curl up on your lap for a cuddle:rolleyes: . All very cute, but gives me a dead leg! I reckon he might be even heavier than that now, he was on 3 meals a day when he came from the home 8 months ago, but now he is down to 2 as he is looking a healthy weight now. Did you see that programme with the "fattest pets in the world"? If you have big dogs you might enjoy it, you will be able to get it free on Channel 4 On Demand. Anyway it had this great dane (I think) in it who weighed 19 stone! He looked exactly like my dog (in fact I wondered for a second if it might be his dad/grandad!) but a lot bigger obviously.0 -

I find that they look like a muzzle meaning that dog owners keep their dogs away from mine, (which is good - he hates dogs). But sadly it means that people stay away and pull their children away. That is a shame because he likes nothing more than kids and cuddles and he is like a huggable bear.0 -
I bought a halti harness yesterday for my 2 yr old collie cross that pulls like a train. Fantastic, like a different dog. Like someone else said, i have resisted buying one because i prefer to teach a dog to walk on a loose lead ( i managed it with my older dog but the littl'un just doesn't get it) but I think it's fantastic.0

No, people stay further away from the greyhound with the halti off.....a bouncing greyhound looks, and can be, dangerous to be around. But with the halti on, everybody who passes her wants to have a stroke....
I'm not sure what the reaction would be with the giants though (not by design I not tend to walk them where lots of people are, but the greyhound goes everywhere with me). That would be interesting. People are always wary of large dogs anyway.0 -

I think the fact that mine sounds like darth vader with a cold when on the lead doesn't help matters either...0
