Help-legal expenses insurance

Hi,

I was wondering if the legal expenses insurance offered with home ins cover civil litigation "defence" fees. Say if i get sued by someone for a contract issue or sale of goods, would a l expenses insurance cover the costs incurred to hire a defence solicitor?

To answer the question definitively you'd need to look at your specific policy however in general I think the answer is yes providing

a) The transaction from your side is a personal one e.g. you aren't selling things as a business or trader.
b) The company consider the case worth defending.

These insurance policies will not pursue cases that they consider are not worth pursuing e.g. chance of sucess is low and of course it would have to be a new problem and not an existing one. You cannot take out insurance for something that's already happened.

In general sales of private goods are "sold as seen" e.g. selling a 2nd hand car, so it's pretty rare that someone gets sued.
