Please explain fuel surcharges

I see that BA just increased its fuel surcharge. If I go online, compare prices for several carriers, and choose BA, then the price I see is the price I pay, right? And if the fuel surcharge changes again tomorrow, I don't have to pay extra when I turn up at the airport, right?
Now I see that calling it a surcharge makes a difference to free or discount tickets, but for a typical purchase, it's just part of the ticket price, right?
Thanks

Information is here re BA and ticket pricing and fuel surcharge.
It is part of the ticket price-there is no way to avoid it.
However if you cancel the ticket then these charges for fuel + the tax should be refunded to you (less reasonable charges...) which is probably why they are 'added' to the cost.0 -
It's all smoke and mirrors, at least BA have the courtesy to tell you what you are going to have pay, up front. Unlike Ryanair who advertise a ticket price "with no fuel surcharges", then charge you extra for hold baggage, checking in at the airport, paying by Credit Card, getting a head start in the rush for seats, more legroom, a sandwich, a cup of tea, etc, etc !
I notice that one US airline now charges extra for window seats - Ryanair are a bit slow on that one !0
