How to fix Back Tilt button on office chair?

Hello
I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix an office chair?
The button under the chair that stops the back rest from moving backwards and forwards doesn't do anything! it looks like it's broken... I can't seem to explain this very well.
She needs to have it in a fixed position whereas it just moves back and forward.
the up and down button works fine and seems to be an air/piston type thing.
would this be the same for the back forward/back option?
I was hoping that maybe something has come out of place and we can fix it ourselves or at least try before buying a new one.
Any suggestions would be helpful
thank you.
