When you say you have washed it, what do you mean? Do you have a carpet cleaner, did you hire one, or have you scrubbed it with a brush?

How big is the carpet, and what is it made of?

Shake n' Vac usually helps, but then it is only my kids making it smell ( and they have grown out of that now), so not as bad as dogs.

Has it dried after you shampooed it? Sometimes, a damp wool carpet can smell. Antibacterial Febreze might work.

Hi I know this is quite a random suggestion, but have you heard of something called rug patrol? It's a bit like shake 'n' vac but it's sold in petshops and it's used to kill fleas. Anyhow, my mom used to swear by that stuff, she'd put it down every so often to freshen the carpet up even though the dog had been treated for fleas. I think she used to sprinke it on, rub it in a bit with her foot and leave it down overnight. Might be worth a try!

If you just scrub it with a brush and some soapy water then you're just spreading whatever is causing the smell around the carpet and leaving it there.

You ideally need a mechanical carpet cleaner of some sort (we found a Rug Doctor one to be excellent) which will 'pump' the water/soap solution into the carpet, agitate the fibres to loosen everything up and then suck all of the water/dirt back out of the carpet again. That way you wash and then 'lift' out anything that is causing the smell.

I agree about Rug Doctor - it's excellent. Cost £25 to hire for 24 hours, easy to use and did a great job.

You could always buy a Vax from eBay. I have bought 2 from the same seller (vacuum and carpet cleaner) and they were about £30-£40 each. They are graded stock (couple of scratches but fully functioning) and sold constantly.

A link to eBay seller I have used is http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Graded-Electricals-Direct

I have no connection with the above other than being a hugely satisfied customer
