I have a website, and when I search using Yahoo using key words my site comes up within the top 10 on Yahoo. However using the same key words in Google i dont even get within the top 50.
What can I do to increase my hits on google effectively. Google is more popular and therefore I want to try and get my website higher on google.
Any suggestions will be greatfully received.
Oh by the way my website is built using MS Front Page
Thanks

This is tricky and all depends on how bad the competition for your keywords is. You have to start building back links not only of the A-B type but of the A-B-C type. The more backlinks you build, the greater importance Google will place on your website depending on the keywords you have used to link back. This does take time and won't be overnight.
Make sure your backlinks are from websites with similar content and are placed on pages with a good page rank.
Use your keywords in your page titles
Keyword density of between 3-5% in your pages, don't overdo this otherwise Google will classify it as keyword spamming.
The most important thing is to keep it as simple as possible. Navigation should be easy, and content should be well laid out in a logical manner.
But out of all the above, I would bet on back links .. the more "relevant" backlinks you have from similar sites that have good page rank, the better you will fare overall with your site. Hope this helps!0 -
As Dagger_Meerkat says, Backlinks are vital. Make sure you have an entry in the relevant section of www.dmoz.org which is free listing, but can take up to 6 months, if you can afford it pay Yahoo.com to list you in their directory (used to be $299 listing fee). If you search google for Directories with your keywords you will get a list, apply to them for listing.
Internally make sure your Page Titles are relevant and also make sure your Meta-Description is selling your product or service and at all costs make sure that you DO NOT duplicate content.
Then you have to wait! I'm not sure if they are still doing it, but Google used to 'Sandbox' new websites for up to 9 months before they would start to index them - however if you get a bunch of good backlinks you can avoid that penalty

Thanks for those tips - I already try to optimise my page titles etc to make them relavent etc. I guess it is working well with Yahoo but Google seems to be a challenge.
I have added my website to the open directory as suggested.
Any more tips/suggestions would be greatfully recieved.

Google is a challenge, but it provides 70% of the UK's search engine traffic so you MUST do things right for Google. Do you have a Google account?, if not creat one at www.google.com/accounts when you have access to that you will have Google Analytics, and also Google Webmaster Tools. Webmaster tools tell you exactly how Google sees your website and also gives you loads of help regarding what they are expecting to see. It is the most useful resource you will find on the web0

are you just after glory hits, or actual sales prospects? post linl to similar sites, forums, directories etc.
a sneaky coding tip is to add all letter of the alphabet to the meta tags-
a b c d e f,etc, through to x y z- ANY search should then include your site..?
also add mis-spelt versions of words that people may be looking for, just in case.Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
Sometimes seen lurking on the compers forum :-)0
