Which Banks Belong Together

With all the recent press about "how save are your savings" and the fact that people are being advised to spread thier savings around - how can I find a list of which Banks/Buliding Societies etc. belong to the same companies so that I can assure myself of this govenment gaurentee of covering the first £35000 -
