You have to convert it in to a MPEG4 format for the PS3 to play it (they don't play AVI's by default).

    try this program:
    http://www.redkawa.com/videoconverters/ps3video9/

not got a PS3 but forums say it's the best converter to get movies to play on PS3's

Just add the ps3 and laptop to your wireless network if you have one and you can then watch avi's that are on your laptop via the ps3

I watch .avi's on my PS3. They are generally as a divx codec which was included in an update a couple of months ago.
I put films on a memory stick from the laptop and plug straight into usb port on PS3.

You can goto divx.com and d/l there convertor for free.

    thanks guys,

i have converted an avi file using a ipod converter so it is now mpeg4, put it on a stick and it now plays on my ps3:D , but it is not a very good picture, is it because it has down scaled it to fit an ipod screen ? i am trying to watch it on my 50" plasma.

also i am not wireless bb yet, hopefully soon. so when i am do you mean i can connect to the playstation site via my ps3 then download updates which will recognise avi's without converting them.
    thanks again .:T

    Note:
There's a new PS3 Firmware being released in a week or 2. That may add a few features that may help you..

Can you not connect the PS3 to your router via ethernet cable ?
If you haven't connect to the internet at all yet, you will have about 2 hours worth of updates and installs.

the reason that the picture will be rubbish is that they were encoded for the ipod's screen res, not HD resolutions like the ps3 uses.

i know how rubbish the picture will be as i found my old SE k750's memory card and watched some vids from it and it was terrible
