banking question

hi....justhoping there is someone on line that can help me straight away.....can anyone tell me if banks are allowed to remove money from one account to another without contacting you?.........briefly, my husband changed jobs and as it was half way through the month they paid him by cheque and not direct into the bank.....this means that standing orders were not covered and the account went overdrawn [ incurring loads of charges..but thats another story] today we went to draw out out rent money only to find that account empty and the money from it put into the one that is overdrawn............so now we have no money to pay our rent [ already 1 mth in arreas] or have food to eat.....can they do this.........someone answer PLEASE! thank you in desperation

Can and should.... They will do it whether they should or not.
What you need to do is open a basic account with a bank you do not owe money to have your salaries paid into otherwise this will happen again more than likely. You CAN fight them for the money on the grounds that this is money you need for survival ie food, rent and expenses that are seen as priority. Be prepared to fight for it though...

Just realised my first comment might look like I say it's ok for them to... wasn't what I meant :) yes they can... if they should... that's another matter...

Yes. most banks have it written into their T&C's that they can remove money from your account to settle a debt with them.
