Estimated - And Increase In Price

Got my last bill from British Gas as changed supplier.

Have noticed there are different costs as they increased their prices during the period of the last bill to now.

So I could be losing or gaining depending on their calculations.

Anyone got any suggestions I can do to see if they will give me a bit of money back? They dont (and I dont) know what my electric and gas reading was on a particular day

It appears that you are looking for a suggestion to 'invent' a reading at the end of your period with BG?????

Even if you did give a lower reading(than the true reading) - and BG accepted that reading - your new supplier will still start charging you from that lower reading. So there is not going to be much of a saving.

You can't, say, get your new supplier to start charging you from meter reading 34567 and retrospectively try to get BG to change their final bill to meter reading 33567.
Apart from the fraud aspect, the losing and gaining supplier work from the same meter reading.

Or have I misunderstood your post?

You have misunderstood - let me see if can explain again. Not trying to do any fraud. This could be for any type of bills even if you are not leaving them, i.e. when they increase prices in between the last and current bill.

So 'made up' values for ease.....

Last Bill 31 Jan which had reading of 1000
Current Bill 31 May had reading of 2000

    This is made up of
    31 Jan - 31 Mar - 1000 to 1200 charged at £1 (estimated)
    1 April - 30 April - 1200 to 1800 charged at £1.50 (estimated)
    1 May - 31 May - 1800 to 2000 charged at £1.60 (customer read)

I have only give one reason on 31 May which I know is true. As they increased their prices they estimated the readings and they could be wrong and I could be losing/gaining.

    Does that make sense?

    Ah I see.

This is an old chestnut! i.e. was the estimated reading on the price change date correct?

They have a fairly sophisticated algorithm that takes into account weather over the period etc.

However it could be incorrect. For instance you could have used far more at the old(cheap) rate because you had your mother staying and she feels the cold!!. Then you went abroad for nearly all the period of the new(higher) rate.
(interesting that Mother never comes to stay after the new rate was introduced!!!!)

BG will normally concede a small adjustment of the meter reading - but if you do your arithmetic I suspect the savings will be very small.

So probably worth just excepting this and have to say they are right as probably more hassle to argue and complain on it

It seems a bit odd that you used the least over the 2 months at the cheapest rates? I really dont know (obviously) but its seems odd that your usage was 6x more in april, and 2x more in may compared to feb/march ? Maybe worth pointing that out to them? They will probably do nothing though :(

Sorry-just read that they are made up values-oops! That'll teach me to read things properly first!
