New Ebay Email Scam

Have had a look and don't think this has been posted before - if so let me know!

Anyway - I received a new spoof ebay email over the weekend. Unusually it did not tell me that I was under investigation for fraud, but rather was an invitation to become a Power Seller!

It looked totally genuine, but my suspicion was raised as it claimed that I was being invited cos I sold loads of items each month (I don't!).

I hovered over the link and sure enough it was a spoof, so after mailing it to spoof@ebay.co.uk, it was confirmed to be not from ebay.

So, just a warning that the spoofers are changing tac' and trying to get our details by massaging our egos!
I'm so sexy it's a wonder my underpants don't explode.

Well I fell for that one and now somebody has hacked into my account and tried to list things under my very good name.

Ebay has caught this and have cancelled all listings under my name and stopped my account for up to 72 hours while they investigate it.

I can't tell you how I feel. Its like being robbed. I know its only an ebay account but I have worked hard on that maintaining such a high standard and had active listings about to close in the next 24 hours.

Please watch out and don't be sucked in like I was.

That's all you will ever get but ebay do act on the mails sent. Sometimes if you go back and check the dodgy link (be careful of trojans) it's been disabled within hours.

  • Ebay state that they will NEVER ask for your details on an email, or have a link in an email for changing your details (at least thats what they say...)

Taking this at face value seems to be the safest way to avoid issues?

Quite right, if you remember that you should be absolutely fine. There was an interesting report a couple of months back on Business lunch about phishing mails, it is estimated that 96% of people will not fall for one, which leaves 4 % of people likely to fall foul of a scammer. Bearing in mind how many thousands of these get sent out every hour there must be hundreds of people falling for them every day.

They likened these mails to receiving snail mail on Barclays bank headed paper addressing you as 'dear Barclays bank customer' and asking you to post back details of your bank account, pin number and all security questions. It seems unlikely that anyone would do that yet we are fooled into a false sense of security by e mail.

barmonkey, there are dozens of these emails doing the rounds, some better than others.

Send them to spoof@ebay.com and just delete them.

I just wish they'd send them to the right user to start with, amount of times i've had scams from eBay and PayPal to my main email instead of the seperate ones i use for all the important things.

Well worth the domain fee alone :)
