unemployed partner but i work f/t

My oh is unemployed. He has tried for 2 months now. Which I know is nothing in comparision to some people. He has always done unskilled manual work.

My question is, can he claim unemployment benefit?
Can he get a training course?
What help can we get other than the very confusing tax credits.

My sitution is, we have 3 children under 7, I work full time shift work. Earn approx £25k. Now OH isn't bring any money home, things are very tight, infact I don't think I can keep us a float too much longer.

Any ideas on any benefits please. I can't get past the child care cost on entitled to, coz at the moment OH is doing child care.

He will be able to claim contributions based JSA if he has paid sufficient NI Contributions.

You need to inform tax credits that he is no longer working.
    Gone ... or have I?

If he cannot claim contribution based JSA he can still sign on for credits only to go towards his future pension. Also he will be able to do anything on offer at the Jobcentre even though he receives no money.

Generally, Jobcentre funded training courses are only available to those unemployed and signing on for six months or more.

To fill the gap for those not yet six month unemployed, Jobcentre use local training provision (called Intermediaries) who offer training but have no contract with the Jobcentre. These Intermediaries get their funding elsewhere (Learn Direct, European Funding, Local Authority Funding etc) and target specific areas, postcodes for their courses.

Many of these are very good and give the help you are looking for.

Check the local library or the Jobcentre for these. Sometimes, the help is available for those who are 'unwaged' or even earning, not just those who are signing on.

Hi Yoskint - your partner may also be entitled to some help if he wants to study with the Open University.
