John Lewis carpet dept - bizzare !

Anyone experienced any problems with John Lewis carpet department? I called into my local store with measurements to get an approximate quote on some carpet (lounge/bedroom/hall) - When I finally dragged the assistant from her more interesting conversation with a colleague she said 'we dont do halls' asking for clarification I was told its because the carpet comes in 5m lengths (er and cant they just add 2 m onto the length needed of the lounge?) -
Am I wasting my time ? I'm reluctant to use Carpetwrong (sorry) or Allied as I just have an immediate sense of getting ripped off the minute I walk in!
Any advice?

Tell them it's not a hall, it's a 'vestibule'. Carpet comes on roll far longer than 5m - I think they meant the width of the carpet is 5m."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Go on a different day and find another assistant who knows what they are talking about.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
We used John Lewis about 6 months ago for new carpet in our bedrooms, landing, stairs and hall...no problems at all. I agree with olly300 - try again with a different assistant.0

I used our local John Lewis for my bathroom lino and hall carpet a few years ago. I have a small and funny shaped hall (5 sided) and was persuaded by the man who came to measure that carpet tiles were the answer. Only thing was he worked it out wrong. When it came to fitting, there was 1 tile short!!! I had to wait 5 weeks for the extra tile! Everytime I called to find out what was happening, no-one had a clue and could never find my 'file'. The fitter did a great job but the shop were useless.
All my other carpets have come from a local carpet shop that have been doing business for years, provide great service and charge a pittance for fitting!

I also found John Lewis pretty pants TBH.
They 'fitted' a car seat that I was interested in, but as the salesgirl didn't know how to fit it (so much for getting a professional fitting, to check seat is compatible, for safety reasons) she bumbled about for ages, then said seat didn't fit, and recommended a different car seat without even testing it in my car.
Second experience was with a cot. It was the ideal design but was out of stock for two months. When it finally arrived, it was one another customer had half assembled and returned as the wood was split. Had to fight for a refund and no apologies or gestures made.
I really wasn't impressed with this store at all. I agree with the above poster. Try your local carpet firms and you should get a more personal service.

I've never had anything but great service from JL, used them loads.
However the ' we dont do halls' thing is weirdMy parents had a living room and hall carpet fitted by them about a year ago. The only glitch was when they cut the hall carpet they cut it totally wrong and ruined it so they had to wait for a replacement, from what i remember my mum got a partial refund for the inconvenience.

Thats odd, JL came out and gave us a quote in January for downstairs hall, up stairs hall and stair carpets, we have a 3 bed 1970's semi so not large by any stretch of the imagination, ended up getting one Allied as the price was much more competitive!!!! (can't say we felt ripped off either, but that does normally depend on the salesperson!)0

thanx for all your comments - Update - little local carpet shop shop was great - really helpful. He said I'm not the first that has experienced this- he said that it was straightforward and thought it funny they would turn business away! A lesson learn't the local shop is king!0

We have recently had a John with Lewis carpet fitted. The guy that came out to measure inspired confidence, so we went ahead with the order. The fitters turned up (they are sub contractors, which we didn't expect), they didn't fit paper beneath the underlay (which we'd paid for), didn't wear protective footware and the carpet is faulty. We have arranged for the John Lewis inspector to come out and we'll keep you posted.0
