computer sounds like a tank!! help

I am a complete novice when it comes to computers, so please be gentle!

My computer sounds like a tank.

I have had my current computer around 2 1/2 years.

Basic user eg internet and using word for work/ study, I have quite a few pictures and a lot of duplicated work due to taking documents off this computer onto a pen to work on on the go, only to put a new document on, but not replace.

tends to make most noise when it first goes on and when I am going lots of things at once.

Looking forward to qualifying, then I can delete most of the stuff.

can anyone give some solutions?

If it makes a lot of noise when starting up and when being heavily used it is most likely one of the fans trying to col it down or possibly the hard drive. I would recommend switching it off then taking the side off (assuming it's a desktop) and checking to see how dusty it is. If it's really dusty clean it out, the best way is with a can of compressed air (best if you do it outside on a dry day in my opinion). You shouldn't really use a vacuum as they can generate static which can damage components but I have done this in the past, but if you do it's at your own risk. A soft brush can also be used, carefully, to clean heatsinks. Once you've cleaned out the dust it should run cooler and the fan shouldn't come on as much.

If that doesn't fix it and it's more of a grinding noise it could be the hard disc, in which case back up anything important as quickly as possible as it could be on the way out. Thane if it does fail you'll have your work saved and can replace the disc.

If you don't have it you can buy it in places like Maplins. Or you can just blow it, just try not to get the dust in your face.

Well, that's probably just the drive accessing data. Does it only occur when you are running programs? Does it make these noises when the computer is idle?

Well, the failing to boot sounds like a fault in progress .. get urself another hard disk and backup your important data before the drive totally fails on you.
