1994 Corsa automatic ''juddering''- help please!

Had new leads/plugs put in, full service etc.

Garage couldn't find anything wrong, but after short while, it started to judder again and cuts out when in low gear - very dangerous when pulling out of junctions!

Also when accelerating, judders again!

Can be going perfectly for a day or two, then back to playing up again.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

TIA

Regards
B

  • Hi Birdy

Not to worry you, but might it be head gasket?

Does it feel as though it's 'coughing'? My Punto felt like that for a day or two before the temperature warning light came on and it lost all water within 30 minutes of driving. Check your oil tank for white frothy/lumpy stuff - it looks a bit like mayonnaise (oil mixed with water), and whether your water level is very low.

worth checking anyway, and if it is then at least you haven't damaged the engine by driving till it completely goes...

Does it get worse in the damp?

my hubby works on cars . He says it may be a cracked distributor cap (but would have thought garage would have done this). Good news is not head gasket as it wouldnt go well for a day or two with that.It could be a blocked air filter also.Hope this helps.

    Fuel or electrical, I'd say.

Have you changed petrol stations, or let the tank get very low, before refuelling (not likely really) possibly dirty fuel lines?? Your repair garage could sell you some Forte cleaner, just a Pepsi can size of fluid, they'd pour into the car. Halfords probably sell something similar.

Electrical, takes more of investigate n fiddle about, with connctions on plugs n dist cap, as mentioned.

They're the cheap n easy things.

Getting more unlikely, is starting to check gearbox sensors - or fluid loss from the gearbox - asume you've not got big oily leaks below the car??

could be fuel related if it judders under acceleration. have you ran your car with the fuel tank very low? if so this would have let c**p into your fuel system and hence restrictiong fuel flow. try changing your fuel filter. you can also add fuel additives like redex from halfords etc which helps to clear the fuel system.

thinking about it have you had the fuel injection sensors checked out?

My money is on the stepper motor is on it's way out as cars will stall at low revs/idling when it's starting to go.

    Thanks to all who contributed.

It turned out to be distributor - took third garage to get to the bottom of the problem!
Although i was told that it was not the problem at one point - can only keep fingers crossed for the moment. I have lost confidence in the car now though!

    Thanks once again

  • Hi all - am having the same problem - bought a car and had to wait for it to be re-fueled as it had ran out of petrol. Since driving it i am getting the same problems - cuts out when in first gear and doesnt seem to want to move when im driving - judders then kicks in then stops again. Filled it up and it worked fine - now is happening again.

I have taken the car to a garage and they couldnt sort anything. They have now went it to BMW who have replaced loads of stuff to do with the exhaust (which the other garage did too) neither have spotted the prolem (luckily this is being paid for by the garage i got the car from. - been 2 weeks without the car now.

Anyone have any advice - or any garages that can spot what this problem is (Leeds area).

sometimes if you let the fuel tank run dry it sucks in resdiue at the bottom of the tank which can block the fuel lines and injectors if no fuel filter is fitted

  • Yup, a new fuel filter would be a good place to start.
Does it only occur when you get low on fuel?
