Tracking old share certificates

Hi,
I am a complete novice when it comes to shares, but have a number of share certificates purchased 4 or 5 years ok, I have moved house a couple of times and have not kept track of the companies, updated my details on the share certificates so have no idea, if they are still going, gone bust, been takenover etc etc.
Is there an east way to find out the current situation of these shares, track what has happened to the companies, if my shares are worth anything, etc
thanks
