gurgling in sinks and toilets! what is it!!

Options
when water is going down the plughole in upstairs bathroom the downstairs toilet gurgles and the kitchen sink gurgles (and sometimes water comes up the kitchen sink!) when we moved in a couple of weeks ago we noticed the septic tank was overflowing so scottish water came and emptied it (for a fee of £320:eek: ) they left a ticket saying no problems or blockages, but just this past few days the gurgling has started again and also sometimes when the toilet flushes the water comes right to the top of the rim?? any ideas anyone? the house was built around 1994 and the septic tank i think is shared by 2 other neighbours.
totally a tog!:D

Have you checked with the 2 neighbours how often the tank needs emptying, assuming they've lived for at least the last 12 months or so?

I would say you have a blockage

In a previous house I always knew when the drain from the toilet and utility room was blocked because the toilet would gurgle when the washing machine was empting, the pipe had a tight bend where it would get blocked. Just had to get the drain rods out. If your septic tank was full perhaps the waste has backed up in the pipe. Is there a manhole between the house and the septic tank? If so lift the lid and turn on the taps and see if the water runs through, if not then you have a blockage and need the drain rods!

    Sad story........

going back a few years when I was kid... one day our bathroom sink started gurgling . The next day my dad checked the drain pipe outside, went up the ladder to see down it and found a baby hedgehog wedged in it drowned :(
It must have fallen in the drain itself and climbed up the inside of the pipe to try and escape and got stuck. Cover was put over the drain from that point.
  • thanks everyone, my neighbours say they've not been aware of any previous probs with septic tank etc, and their houses aren't gurgling!

hardpressed, the same thing is happening with washing machine and toilet and also when the dishwasher empties etc, kitchen sink gurgles and sometimes you can see the start of the water rising in it! thanks for all replies:T
