Ok apart from needing a life i wondering can anybody point in the direction of somewhere which sells a recent / or fairly recent version of visual basic/ studio for a cheaper price than everywhere else i have already looked. Thanks in advance for any help.

They're fully working free versions of Visual Studio 2008. They're basically lightweight versions of the retail products. You can compare what features are missing here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Visual_Studio#Editions
