Renovating an ugly brick fireplace

Hi All,

I have an ugly brick fireplace in my living room that I would like to beautify. Does anyone have experience or ideas that I can use?

The bricks are a red colour and completely stand out in the my neutral-white room.

Can I colour the bricks without painting over them?
