Learner Drive Insurance

I have just bought a new BMW convertible and was expecting to teach my son who will be getting his provisional soon to drive. I have looked on confused.com and the lowest price I can get is £5990 even though I only pay £390 for my own insurance. Does anyone have any advice, or will it be better if I just buy him a little cheap car to learn in then buy hime a better one once he has passed his test. Help please.

If this is a genuine question and not a windup, you should have looked into the insurance costs for you son before buying the car.
A cheap, tiny engine, old reg car is best for a learner - the lower the insurance group the better. Dont assume swapping once he's passed for a better car will be cheaper - risk increases as they no longer have to be accompanied and therefore the costs usually rise.0 -
You are planning to teach your son on a new BMW convertable?????
In incresing order of ridiculousness - "new", "BMW", "convertable" in the context of 17 year old boys learning to drive. Add to that the thought of teaching your son yourself on your precious new car..........I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Thanks for your replies, but it still does not answer my question.
Firstly, why would this be a wind up, some people can buy this car and secondly I bought the car for myself and was just enquiring whether it would be possible to insure a learner driver. Oh and I am certainly not ridiculous. :mad:0 -
The price that you have been quoted reflects the risk. No sensible person would teach a 17 year old to drive in a new BMW unless they have more money than sense. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
