Reclaim unclaimed Maternity Allowance

Does any one know if it is possible to reclaim maternity allowance that someone was entitled to, but didn't realise at the time, so didn't? I'm asking the question on behalf of a friend who wasn't aware that she could claim maternity allowance and thought she could not claim anythng as she was not working. I calculate she has mised out on £1,000s. Her child is now 18 months old. Is she too late?

Many thanks

I believe she would be too late, most benefits can only be backdated for 3 months without a special reason. Not knowing she could claim it isnt a valid reason.
