Daily Mail article on savings
I have just been reading the front page headline article in the Daily Mail which states:
MILLIONS PAY £270 TOO MUCH ON BILLS
Now obviously many are paying too much for their utilities but I thought this was ‘creative journalism’ at its best!
It gives a table of savings in large print provided by uSwitch. However you need to look(and importantly understand) the small print explanations to realize that the savings given are not what they seem.
Firstly the highest price is for a cheque or cash payment accounts, the lowest for Direct Debit and often internet based accounts.
Inevitably it quotes British Gas tariffs with their latest 14.2% increase without spelling out that it is inevitable that all the other suppliers will follow – no doubt when their current prices have attracted lots of new customers.
At least it mentions that companies like uSwitch(who will no doubt will get a lot of new custom from this article) get a commission of £40 for every customer they move.

Daily Mail in poor journalism/ slanting a story shock. Whatever next? Daylight hours shorter in Winter?
I saw the same story and thought exactly the same as you. I've typed in very precise consumption figures into all the comparison sites in the past few months and not seen anything like the savings claimed in that article.0
