Hard Drive temperatures

Options
Any ideas on the normal running temp for a HD ?

I had a HD running quite hot so I added an old fan to the casing and it's now running at 20- 26 C.

The Graphic Card runs at 50-55 C (Nvidia 8500GT).

All seems OK now

What are the normal parameters for HD's ?

From memory the upper limit for a hard drive (running) is something like 50c, but it varies depending on the drive model (some are better than others).

Normally the only way to find out is to look at the manufacturers specs, but as a general rule I believe up to about 50c is ok (I think 20-30c is about the best).
I think Seagate drives currently specify between 0 and 60c operating temp, and something like -5 to 70 when turned off, obviously you wouldn't want to run them at the extremes of the operating tempurature for long as i'd imagine it will cause failure sooner than near the middle of the operating range.

I thought mine ran fairly cool, since they're directly behind a pair of 80mm fans (although there are 4 stacked pretty close together). They run at between 33 and 38 deg. C, and don't cause me any problems.

I try and keep HD away from each other to allow air flow and tie up and cables when possible to keep in neat and tidy this helps air circulate. Fans always help too but tend to make it dusty so I clean pcs out every 6 months or so

Mine run between about 25-45 depending on use. They have been known to run up over 60 before and they're still fine.

Airflow is important and if you've got a few quid spare ditch the ribbon IDE cables if you have any for rounded ones as they improve airflow in the system.

Yes I use rounded cables in one pc most now use sata so no need for smaller profile cables

I leave large gaps in between HD in case so that the air flows
