Car insurance premium (problem)

Hello

I'm going to take driving test in August and after I will pass I would like to buy a car. Before I will do that I would like to have an idea about the insurance premium. I spent plenty of time making quotes at many websites comparing insurance prices and directly with insuring companies. I was quoting for Ford Fiesta 1993 LX 1 1100cc 3dr Petrol Manual 1992-1993. Few my friends had paid for such as car between £650-800 at the age of 17. For me (18 years old) offers were £2200-5200 with £500 excess! I don't have driving license yet but when I was making quotes I had written that I already have one.

Now informations about me:
- Gender: Male
- Date of birth: 03.07.1990 (I had filles that it is 03.04.1990 because I will be 18 in August)
When did you become a UK resident?: February 2008 ( I had filled that it was December 2007 because I will be in England half a year in August, I even filled that I was born in England but the difference in price was only about £200)
- Marital Status: Single
- Type of driving licence held: I filled that I have Full UK
- Driving licence held for: 0 years
- No claims discount: 0 years
- Have you had any motoring convictions?: No
- Have you had any motor insurance claims?: No
- Do you drive any other cars?: No access to any other cars
- Post Code: NN5 5LN
- Employment status: Student

Informations about the car:
- Ownership of vehicle?: I wrote that I already have that car
- When did you purchase the vehicle?: May 2008 (just bought it)
- Who will be the owner of the vehicle?: Policyholder
- Approx vehicle value?: £200
- Vehicle's security device?: Factory fitted Immobiliser
- Does the vehicle have a tracker fitted?: No
- Right or left hand drive?: Yes
- Number of seats?: 4 (I'm not sure)
- How will you use the vehicle?: SDP&C
- Estimated annual mileage (excluding any business mileage): Up to 7000
- Where is the vehicle kept overnight?: Street (At the place of living)
- Number of other cars in your household?: 1

Cover details:
- Policy start date: I filled few days later after actual date
- Type of cover: Third Party, Fire & Theft ( It can be also Third Party Only)
- Voluntary excess: I filled even £500
- How would you prefer to pay for your car insurance?: Annually
- Are you a homeowner?: No

I was really suprised at such as big amounts for a car worth only £200. I'm in England only 4 months (by the way sorry for my English and for sure plenty of spelling errors) so I'm not well informed in British car insurance prices but like I had written before few my friends paid between £650-800 and they were 1 year younger than me. I really don't know what's the cause of the premium which was offered to me. I'm counting on your help which is very important for me. I don't hope for the best but I wish the price would be even about £1200.

Thank you very much for your time which you spent on my problem. I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

So you have no licence but you will be taking your test in August, have you any driving experience?
If your english is as poor as you claim do you think you will pass the theory test?

As you will only be doing up to 7000 miles per year have you thought that public transport might be cheaper for you?

I don't know of any 18 year old boys paying £600-700 for their insurance. Girls maybe, but not boys.

The £2000 you are quoting doesn't sound THAT unreasonable for a first year's insurance with no driving experience or no claims discount.

I don't have driving license but when I was filling quote I wrote that I have. I practise driving on privite parking and I had just applied for provisional driving license.
I don't have problems with understanding other people and with reading but my writing as you can see isn't very good. Forunatley theory test is just multiple choise and what's more I have possibility to hear a polish lector in headphones.
I was considering public transport but I would prefer to use my own car especially that I have 4.5 miles in one way to my school so I would have to use 2 buses.

Indeed they are girls. For me as a student £2200 sound very unreasonable for a car which value come to £200. I don't see a possibility to earn £2200 and attend to school at once. I'm not well informed in British car insurance prices but one year of insurace which beyond 12 times car prices isn't a good deal in my opinion.

Thank you very much for your help. I hope that maybe somebody will help me to find the cause of such as big amount (if it really is as big as I think).

The point is that the value of your own car is immaterial. As a brand new, young male, driver, you are very likely to have an accident in which you might quite easily write off someone else's brand new £50,000 Porsche or whatever.

Put in that context, £2,000 isn't that high a premium.

Young girls pay less than half the premium young boys do, because they are significantly less likely to have accidents and apparently cause less damage when they do because they tend to be driving more slowly. They also do less mileage on average so have less propensity to have accidents for that reason too.

You really should consider if you need a car, given the level of costs that you will incur. You won't get premiums significantly less than you have mentioned, particularly as you will be penalised for not having lived in the UK very long.

I understand that your advice is to use public transport. But when could I start driving? Without being a policyholder I won't have a NCD bonus. Of course it will cost me less after a year even without using a car because I will have driving license a year. On the other hand is it really as that good? I don't think that a year break of using a car will have a good influence on my driving. I will be only seemingly a better driver because of holding driving license a year longer but in fact I will be worse.
I wont't be penalised as that much for being a short time in UK, it will cost me less than £200.

Sounds like your friends are insuring a parent as the main driver with themselves as a named driver. This reduces the premium considerably but is illegal unless the adult is actually the main driver.

You may be able to reduce the premium by adding an adult as a secondary driver on your car.

Thank all of you for your help. I think that I will just have to wait a year and than buy a car. The only other possibility is that my father will be the main driver. I will just use the car to drive to school and he will be using it the rest of the time.
My friends have such as cheap insurance because they are girls. I didn't know that here are so big diferences in the premiums for the males and females. Where are those equal rights for women and men...

"Equal rights" doesn't apply to insurance because there are demonstrably different risks in insuring men and women.

I'm sure Dawid that you would be able to insure a car cheaper in Poland as a Polish national than I would as a Euro sceptic! :rotfl:

I think that I can't insurance a right hand car in Poland but I'm not shure. If I could it would be great, we have very cheap premiums.

    MarkyMarkD:

I just mentioned about that because usually when women have worse situation than men they are for equal rights and when the situation is different it's because of statistics. I'm not complaining about that. Actually I don't why I had written that, I'm just not happy about those insurance prices.
