Laminate flooring for new-build house

Hi guys,

We've just bought a new build house and are planning to lay laminate flooring. The blurb on the flooring says that its suitable for use on new level floors...does this mean i don't have to use underlay?

We went to the house yesterday and the floors have a sort of thick board already laid on top of the concrete floors.

Very confused, help!

Thanks for not laughing at my question, lol!

You will need an underlay under the laminate. As for the boards that are down, sorry you'll have to ask the builderf exactly what they are.

Now this is important. You NEED and I mean NEED at least 6 weeks after the plastering and final floor screed is done ( and idealy 6 weeks after the bulk of the painting is done) before laying laminate flooring in a new house. Otherwise it will absorb damp and swell, you will also totally void the warrenty otherwise.

I suspect the thick board you have on your concrete is a chipboard floating floor.Use underlay and laminate and you should be fine.
  • Have the skirting boards been fitted already?

It would be much better if you could have them fit after the laminate has been fitted.

There are some good pointers for fitting laminate here-
