When do tax credits end?

I receive the basic tax credit for my 18 yr old son who will complete his A levels in the next two weeks. I have been told that child benefit will continue until 1st September but when does child tax credit end - is it the end of the official school year or the date when the last exam is taken?

Thanks for any advice here.

  • Tax Credits should stop onthe last day of non-advanced education (A-Levels) - in this case it would be the date of the last exam.
  • I would just like to clarify the exact rules regarding Tax Credit payments for children/young people leaving full time non-advanced education:-

If a child leaves full time education to go on to further advanced education, CTC and child benefit will continue until 31st August.

If the child leaves full time education to go to work, be supported by family or just become a lazy dosser, the CTC (and I assume child benefit) stops on the last day they are in full time education (usually on the date of their last exam if they turn up for it).

Note: CTC (and also child benefit probably) continues automatically until 31st August AFTER the child's 16th birthday autimatically. You should inform TCO/CBO if they start working before this date. (eg. If they are too young to leave school at the summer break and are required to stay until Xmas)

I phoned tax credits a few days after my daughter finished her last exam as she hopes to go to uni as long as she passes her exams. My tax credits this week went down by the amount I usually get for her. I haven`t had a letter as yet. She does have a part time job as bank of mum stops when they are able to get a saturday job or something similar. I have asked her for a contribution towards her keep but still waiting!

If the plan is for her to go to uni you should call them up and tell them "you" made a mistake. She doesnt leave non-advanced education officially until 31st August. They should re-instate the payments for her. If they say anything to contradict this tell them to check the recently updated guidance (this was previously a grey area), if they get shirty request to speak to a team leader to make a complaint as they are not willing to accept a valid correction to a change of circumstance.

    Thanks subson...

I`ll wait until I get the letter as I also did the renewal over the phone too so there could be another reason for it. But then again she has just got a job to tide her over until she starts uni and she starts on Monday and it`s full time so I wouldn`t get it now anyway.
