monaural earphone or stereo adapter

Can anyone help me,
I have a deaf ear and for this reason have never had a personal player of any kind. I would dearly love to have one of the new personal DAB/MP3 players (Pure Pocket DAB2000 or Perstel DR301) but as they come with stereo earphones housing the aeriel I would miss half of the sound.
Is there a monaural earphone that would work with these models or can I get an adapter that would change the stereo into mono through the stereo phones supplied.
I hope I don't have to give it all up as a bad job but it is too much money to spend and not be able to use it properly.

There are certainly headphones with mono switches. You can get extension cables with mono switches such the one on this page 4th item down but that looks a bit long:
