OS upholstery cleaning help

Options
Ive already looked in the index and cant find anything.

Last week i removed the covers from my 3 piece and washed them and now ive replaced them the arms of the chairs look a little grubby compared to the seating and backs.Does anyone know how to clean them.Ive already tried stain removing wipes but it didnt work as its not a stain its more of just day to day grubbiness. Not sure of what material its made from but its cloth.

On the tag underneath it says:

To remove localised dirt, sponge lightly with warm water, tried and didnt work

For stubborn stains use a mild solution of pure soaping agents and dont overwet,is pure soaping agent soap powder?

ps i have no soda crystals as i cant find them in stock anywhere but i do have bicarb and viniger and any advise or tips would be great if you can help.

I found that the only thing that was effective on a sofa I was given was vanish spray. LOTS of it.

  • If you can beg, borrow or rent a vax type carpet cleaner, they have attachments to clean upholstery. I find that they work quite well and if there are any stubborn marks, rub them gently with a flannel with some ordinary toilet soap on, then 'vax' the soap off.

If it's that bad, then it may be worth getting a professional in.

I was very cheeky and ordered a steam cleaner from qvc. I used it for 30 days, cleaning just about everything in the house and then sent it back!!!!!!!!! Naughty I know, but I did end up buying one a lot cheaper elsewhere. It was brilliant on upholstery - particularly the car, where my son was ill! Cannot recommend enough.

I've got a vax and wouldn;t be without it now. Great for cleaning carpets as well as other areas. I originally got the one that loks like a hoover from B&Q for around £100. It is great but wouldn't do the stairs due to it being like a hoover. After 2 uses the spongey thing got stuck (used to tell you when it was full) so used this as an excuse to take it back to B&Q and swapped it for the more expensive one that will clean stairs and other furnishings. Full price they're about £145. A lot of money but if you were considering getting a guy in to do the cleaning then buying your own will soon be the cheaper option. Actually we've lent ours to a few friends and neighbours who usually give us a little something for lending it and usually we get the cleaning fluid they;ve bought handed back too (we always tell them they are free to borrow but need to buy their own cleaning fluid (£199 or £2.99 a bottle, you only need a few capfuls though).

I have a vax and a steam cleaner which are both great for cleaning/freshening the sofas but the ultimate clean is to remove the covers and put through the washing machine which I do twice a year. It sounds as if you have already done this. IME no wipes, soaks, shampoos or vaxing will get out what a washing machine cannot:o

I've used washing up liquid warm water and a clean white cloth to clean my sofa arms. It works. Don't rub though, you have to pat the sofa and don't overwet or it will be a mess.

This probably isn't as effective as a vax etc but might be worth a go.

thanks for all the replies folks, ive OS steam cleaned the sofa arms,LOL,how you may ask,do i dare tell you or not, well i dragged the extension out of the cupboard and plugged the kettle in,boiled it and boiled it and boiled it some more holding a plastic tray to divert the steam towards the arms and rubbed with a towel with all my energy. The towel was coated in soap, just rubbed the bar up and down a few times.Ok did it work, well not amazing results but better than it was.
  • It is best to have a professional clean your upholstered furniture every couple of years or so. Experts recommend having this done on a regular basis and not wait for it to get visibly dirty. The dirtier a sofa or chair becomes, the harder it is to restore to its original glory.
