Monitor settings help please, my screen is blurry

Hi, can someone please tell me what settings my monitor should be on / screen resolution.

I have a 19 inch monitor and at 1152 / 864 it's a bit blurry, so I thought increasing it would help to 1280 x 960 but it looks even worse now.

Would appreciate any advice or a point in the right direction if it's got nothing to do with the screen resolution settings !

Thanks in advance

Check your monitor menu, if it has an " Auto " button, try that.

    1280 x 1024 sounds a better resolution? Unless it's widescreen is it?

If it's a flatscreen then these will only display a sharp picture at their 'native' resolution. 19" monitors tend to be either 1280x1024 (5:4 aspect ratio) or 1440x900 (8:5 or 16:10 aspect ratio - widescreen). I would hedge a bet that you have a widescreen monitor as these seem to be the standard these days, and is indeed what I use.

1152x864 is a 4:3 aspect ratio (the same ratio as old fashioned tellies and older monitors) so as well as being fuzzy your picture probably looked a bit stretched? 1280x960 is also 4:3.

    It's a jungle out there! ;-)

Look out for cleartype in the Display Properties -> Appearance -> Effects menu, this can cause letters to blur and colours to be off. Change this to be unticked and all is better. As others have said though unless you have a widescreen monitor your resolution should be any of 800*600, 1024*768 or 1280*1024. As john s says TFTs only show best at their native resolution.

Most likely resolution for your 19" monitor is 1280 x 1024.

    What did you do?
After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
    To dissolve the people
    And elect another?

I switched it to 1280 x 1024, it prompted me to restart which I did, it looked ok, but screen was wonky and then pressed auto button which straightened it all up again :)

    Thanks
