Well now that the router is connected up and working,

Not necessarily. OP mentioned earlier that broadband could be accessed using the Virgin modem.

This might be a daft question. Did PC World give you the same model router as before? Are you using Virgin via a cable connection (not a BT phoneline)? I'm wondering if they've given you an ADSL router and your connection is cable. (Ignore this if you have an identical replacement).

Oh dear. really not sure what you mean espresso. The guy in PC world said all I have to do is connect it up exactly as it was with the previous one- which I have- The cable modem was connected to the wireless router with a yellow cable that has LAN written on it. If I disconnect this cable and plug it into the back of my laptop, I can get a connection but of course it isn't wireless so I have to sit at my PC station. The router is ZyXEL NBG334W and it is the same as previous model, ie for cable connections.

Katykat Hi, Right click the 'wireless icon' near the clock, bottom right on the task bar. Have a look in there and view any wireless connections. Yours should be there. Right click on in that area and go to properties and change them.

    :-))

hi TS- its just telling me " no network detected". I've run the windows diagnose problem tool and it tells me to disconnect the router and modem then run the tool again, at which point it tells me the same thing- no network detected- . Beginning to think it must be a bigger fault than just the router. Many thanks everyone anyway.

If you do not have a copy of the user manual, you can download it from here.

You will need to log into the router as I said in post #11 to configure the wireless settings.

While connected to the router using the Ethernet cable, enter http://192.168.1.1 into your browser. You should then get a login screen, the default password is 1234, then click login.

You will need to navigate to the Security page where you can enable the wireless, change the SSID from the default of ZyXTEL to a unique name of your choice. You will then have to enter a long random passphrase into the WPA Pre-Shared key field. You should save your passphrass to a notepad file so that when required you can copy & paste this into any device that you want to allow to connect over your now secure wireless network. All of this is explained in the user manual and is much easier than it sounds.
