Many of the energy companies quite blatantly refer to the gas meter reading as being in units - at the same time as referring to 1kWh as being one unit (of electricity or gas) - no wonder people get confused !
It then tells you to multiply by 2.83; then not to (if you have a "meter measured in cubic meters" - b****y big meter !), but by this time you have already done it !
The you have the:- "colorific" value. Is that something to do with when the flame changes from yellow to blue ?

    Dear, oh dear !

Electricity meters typically measure 1 unit = 1 kWh

    Gas meter aren't so easy.

there are 2 main types of gas meter Imperial and Metric

Theres an easy way to tell the difference

Imperial meters have 4 dials in black reading from left to right.

Metric meters have 5 dials in black reading from left to right.

You then need to apply the correct formula as noted above.

The calorific value (CV) is provided to all energy suppliers by the National Grid as an averaged figure each month and varies between 37.5- 43. This CV varies on every bill and is the part which the National Grid charges towards the transportion costs. Its easier to just use 39 as an average when calculating your own bills.
