Where to buy a power pack?

I need an power pack for an external hard drive I have. I have searched on the manufacturers website and found out the details of what I need to buy:

hxxp://seagate.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/seagate.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2087&p_created=1086889209&p_sid=II9Tx85j&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=2245&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MzIsMzImcF9wcm9kcz00MTAsNDIxLDQ2Myw0NzcmcF9jYXRzPTAmcF9wdj00LjQ3NyZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX25sJnBfcGFnZT0xJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9cG93ZXIgbGVhZA**&p_li=&p_topview=1

In case the link doesn't work, it says:

Model: AC-005
Input: 100-240 Vac, 0.6A,50/60Hz,55-77VA
Output: +5V==/1.5A, +12V==/1.5A

I have no idea what any of this means. Does anybody know how I can go about buying a power pack that meets this specification?

Thanks,

Lenny.

The problem with some of these adapters is that they can use odd connectors. While you might get an adapter that'll give you the right voltages and enough current, you'll probably need an identical replacement. Even if they look the same, they might be wired differently.

It'll also probably be cheaper to buy a whole new enclosure than to source the correct adapter.

If it's IDE, I bought some from saverstore the other week for £6 a pop or thereabouts.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it
  • Thanks for that weekie geek. When you say it would be cheaper to buy the whole enclosure, what are you referring to - a whole new external hard drive or a whole power pack? How can I tell if it's IDE? It connects to the PC through a USB.

Sorry for my ignorance on the topic.

    Thanks,

    Lenny.

What is the name and model of the hard drive. The point is that some of these external disks are simply IDE hard disks in a fancy box, so if the entire thing breaks down, the disk can be removed and used as an internal drive, or have a different connector attached.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.
  • It's a Maxtor 3000LS.

I'd still like to use it as an external hard drive though.

Right. Apparently no IDE capacity. Probably best to look for a new power pack. Maybe contact Maxtor directly?

Inside it will be either IDE or SATA but it will mean stripping the drive out of the box. An external enclosure will cost only a few quid for either type.

That is what I would do but to keep things simple....

No doubt sourcing a replacement PSU will end up costing more than the thing is worth.

    try Ebay

It uses a Maxtor G14J040 40GB IDE133 hard drive. If you can afford it and theres nothing you need on the drive you'd be better getting something like http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.aspx?sku=347090 which will be more reliable and is powered directly from the USB socket.

    So it's IDE.

You can find them cheaper than this but as an example

    ONE OF THESE

There is nothing on the drive that I currently need. I might get the IDE drive out and buy one of these. Cheers for the link.

Oh yes, any advice on getting the drive out? I've got a big hammer but somehow I don't think that's the way to go about it.

    Hammer sounds good to me!

Pull off all the rubber bits and look for screws under.

If you cant find any it must be simply clipped together.
Stick something thin inside the join and start prising it apart to release the clips.
