Intunes MP3 track info

My son ripped most of his CDs to MP3's for his Iriver HD player- just adding artist as file name to each album ( not collecting track info at the time)

Now wants to use his new Ipod , and I believe he must use Itunes to load ?
No artist name comes up, is there a way of getting the track info added without having to rerip CDs into itunes ?

Googled and from a script , but seems to be for MAC users only

Any thoughts welcome

Sounds like you need to ID3 tag the mp3's. iPods and I believe iTunes works via the tag on the mp3 not the filename. Personally I'd stay away from iTunes. You can load tracks onto the iPod in other ways. There's a plugin for Winamp, EphPod is very good too.

You can get mp3 taggers that'll extract what you've put for the filename and apply it to the id3 tag for each tag. Fully automated kind of thing, you just need to leave it for a while to work through the collection.

If you look on https://www.downloads.com, maybe type "mp3 tag" it'll come up with plenty of mp3 taggers. Alternatively if you don't mind spending a small amount on one, DrTag is very good.

    cheers

I agree with you comments about Itunes- but not really keen on any of the "playlist methods" personally I am more than happy with playing directly from "My Music" folder
and his Iriver made music transfer as easy as stand files

If I use a tagger will it find music info for files that are just saved as track1 ...

    thanks again

No, if it's just saved as "Track01" per your example, it won't tag properly. You'll either have to rename the tracks correctly, or re-rip them. When ripping if you use a ripper like EAC or CDex you can pull of the cd information from the web. It'll fill out all the track names and also tag each mp3 after it has been ripped.

If you highlight the tracks you want to tag, can you not select 'Get CD Track Names' from the 'Advanced' menu?

Thanks - but that just says , can't get info unless imported (ripped)
    via itunes

Son's decided to name (tag) some manually , and re-rip others as required
