Turning monitor into a TV?

Hi Guys

I wondered if it was possible to turn my Dell 22" Black Wide Flat Panel (E228WFP) into a TV to use with a Virgin Media box and a Xbox 360?

I heard there are such decives available but dont know anything about them - i have looked and they range from £30 to £150. Whats the difference? Would I have to keep swapping wires over?

Any help would be kindly received!

Thanks

  • I've got a 30 quid box, sat doing nothing in my cupboard. It is a TV tuner with VGA output. I use to plug a freeview box into and used it as a TV for years.

It's very similar to this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=217676&source=1&C=Maplin&U=HomeBasketFillers&T=217676&DOY=31m5

However, some Dell monitors have RGB input.. have a look first; you might just be able to plug them in directly

As far as I am aware there is a white DVI-D which is currently connecting the monitor and the pc and a blue analogue connector.

You might find that its more hassle that its worth using these boxes to force a monitor to a tv.

I had a device which allowed me to use my ps2 through my monitor. I am sorry I cant remember what it was called but basically it allowed me to plug the PS2 via a VGA port which then allowed me to play games via the monitor. The games just didn't look as good as on a tv, the image was poor for some games and sometimes I had only half an image. Hope that helps

I'm not so sure. Do the xbox/virgin box have hdmi? What about hdmi>dvi?
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

I never found it a hassle.. it saved me buying a separate TV when house-sharing

Ringo, would I be able to connect a Xbox 360 and a Virgin Media box at the same time?
  • Maybe: you'd probably need to buy a scart switch box since you can only plug one thing in at once. If you're around north / central london you can have mine - it's doing very little other than taking up space in my 'box of old gadgets'
