Currently have a Dell Inspiron 1300 (1.5 GHz 40GB etc) which has served me well for 3 years @ £250.
Basically its had its time though and running extremely slow now. Looking for a new laptop and im prepared to pay upto about £500. I'm happy with Dell but also open to others if a good deal is about.
Had a quick look at the Dell Inspiron 1720 and the XPS M1530 but tbh im not sure what the exact difference is (except price !!)
Mainly use it for internet (wireless) but tend to have other applications running at the same time. Graphics etc not a major issue but I guess speed etc is.

Use www.dmxdimension.com for the best value ongoing dell deals.
Use www.hotukdeals.com for short term deals. Use the search engine down the RHS to find dell.
Also, keep an eye on www.dell.co.uk/outlet. Though compare the prices back to what they can be bought for via dmxdimension.
And also check out Dell Outlet on ebay, though again dont go mad with the prices.
For £500 the world is your lobster. It will depend on your own priorities around screen size, HDD size, processor type, features. Theres probably 20 machines people will recommend from various manufacturers.

That still seems half decent for a laptop for wireless. If Windows has become slow. Why dont you try a Linux distro. Ubuntu would give you good performance still from that side of the laptop. You didnt mention how much memory you had but if you have 256mb or more then I would recommend that you give it a shot. What have you got to lose.
You can download whats called A live CD for ubuntu. This will allow you to basically boot of the CD directly so you dont even need to install it on your laptop and it will allow you to test it to see what the performance is like.
I use ubuntu on my old celeron laptop and it works really well on the internet for me.0
