The basic McCulloch is £60 in Argos (after £10 off -current offer), as against approx £110 for basic Stihl strimmer(not sold by Argos).
Am I right in thinking the Stihl is the Rolls Royce of strimmers?
Nice to save.

It depends on what your doing with it . If its just for going around your edges once a week for instance go for the cheaper 1 . If your doing large areas on a regular basis go for the Stihl . I've had a Husqvarna now for about 12 years (on a par with Stihl) and it can run all day without a problem . I have had no trouble with it , other than replacing the pull cord once and putting a new sparkplug in every year.

I borrowed a McCulloch hedgetrimmer from a friend a while ago, he'd only used it about twice and I used it once before it broke down and was beyond economical repair. I'd never buy that brand, Stihl have an excellent reputation (like Husqvarna) and should last you fo years.

I have a Mcullogh in the shed which I bought at the end of last summer from Argos and used once. Went to start it up again a month ago and despite following instructions to the letter it wouldnt start and chord jammed.

Am going to return it to Argos but they will just get it repaired. Will then sell it on ebay as to be honest am really dssapointed with it.

Forgot to say I bough a chordless electric (bosch or black and decker - cant remember) on ebay when petrol one died and its been brilliant. Appreciate its no good for vast areas but we have a fair size garden and its not run out of buzz yet. Worth a look.

Not sure how you managed to get a Stihl chainsaw for £100 but I bought mine from Toms recently too and they were great.

I bought the Stihl from a local farm shop in Bakewell. In stock, assembled & all gassed up for £115. Very pleased with it & the shop. What swung it was my wife came in to tell me her friends retired husband had bought a Ferrari!!!
My old McCulloch was 15 years old & very reliable - made in Mexico. McCulloch were taken over by a Taiwanese co a few years ago & I wonder if the product has suffered.
    Many thanks for all replies.

Yes McCulloch was bought by the Taiwanese company in 1999. I am pretty sure that Husqvarna bought some rights to the brand too.

    A quick check confirms it:

I think the Taiwanese bought McCulloch North American and Husqvarna bought McCulloch Europe.
Hoping this year is better than the last. :)
