XP - Made Files Private - now need to revoer them - 'Access Denied'?

Options
Hi, one my user profiles was set to 'Keep files Private' in XP Pro SP2 (workgroup, not domain). The windows installation has gone pear shaped. I am trying to get those users file/folders off the hard disk by connecting it up as a slave. I can see the contents of the disk fine but get 'Access Denied' (as you would do) when trying to access that particualr user profiles.

Any help, tools, work arounds how I can get to these files - its urgent!

Tried running recovery console, windows install repair, but think its messed up completed, I can however browse the disk from another PC, hence my question - BTW can't take ownership of file as PC I am trying from is not a member of a domain (although I could maybe try on one - would this work??).

Have check the MSN article, but doesn't explain much.

Appreciate any help!

  • Couldnt you boot up from the other hard drive, and then deselct the option to make the folder private. Or is what your saying you cant access windows if you booted from the other drive?

But because I cant get into WINDOWS on that install (on that disk) I m not using the correct security keys (the username and password of the account the My Documents is under) for that folder. What happens is hooked up as a slave, i browse to the folder and get access denied.

IIRC in such instances you need to hook the drive up to another XP (pro?) machine, and from the admin account on that windows machine take ownership of the folders.

Unfortunately it's been a long time since I did it, so i can't give a step by step guide (although I believe there are a number on the net).

I think that the best solution is to get a live cd of linux then use that to browse and copy the files to somewhere else on the hard disk.Windows XP will always see the file permissions.
Ever stop to think and forget to start again?
  • You can right click them and take ownership of the files, I've had this problem before.
