I have appealed a decline once and failed :( You do have to convince them that you can pay but you also have to convince them that you WILL pay.

If you have a bad credit score, it may be worth you starting out with a low limit card such as Capital One and building your credit, then re-applying :)

OH was declined a Capital One card a few years back. They said he could appeal the decision but were a bit vague on what grounds he was refused.

We wrote a letter covering as many points as we could think of that might have had a bearing on the refusal.

It turned out that it was down to a trivial thing about whose name the telephone was in and once the situation was explained, he was accepted with a decent credit limit.

Try to think of any reason why you would be declined and address the possible issue by letter.

It may end up being an exercise in futility, but it's always worth a shot - if it works it will save another new application/search.

If the refusal was to do with past bad credit then perhaps a rebuild card such as Niteflyer suggests would be worthwhile. I know of several people who have gone down this route and eventually got onto a good credit track.

Can I ask what the M&S 2 year credit deal is you mention in your headline? I know they offer balance transfers at 0% for either 6 or 9 months.

M & S in the past have reversed decisions on products. Phone the number on your decline letter and ask to speak to one of the underwriters. It depends on what the reason for your decline was as to whether they will overturn the decision.

this is similar to hire purchase. you get the product eg £2200 and it is repaid over 2 yrs interest free . but i beleive it is 'linked' to the more card.

i have £12k currently stoozed so my credit file is not bad. i have all the positives steady job, own home several yrs, NEVER missed payments.

they initially referred to the responsible lending response BAH ... good commendable way to lead the market but a sledgehammer approach that needs tweaking.

i presume i might be able to show always having a min of £1k in current account.

What it is, is that it replaces the interest free loans that they used to do on furniture. You need to have sufficient credit available on your &more card to add the cost of the furniture you want to purchase. If you haven't got sufficient available credit, they need to be able to increase your credit limit by the amount you need. If you have a high limit or are up to your limit, or have had a limit increase within the last 6 months, you will not have anything available to spend. Does this help at all?
  • I once applied on the telephone for an Alliance and Leicester cashback card (when it was run by A & L) and was shocked to be turned down by letter even though it appeared that everything was ok on the telephone.
It transcribed that whoever took down my details was deaf as a post as most of my details on the copy application that they sent me were incorrect!
Corrected everything and had a very happy relationship with them until MBNA took over and eventually cashback was dropped. I have not used the account since and now use the Egg Money card for cashback.
